Eshinni/Kakushinni Memorial Service

June 8, 2025

Sunday at 10:00 AM (PST)

At Yakima Buddhist Church, also available via Zoom

This weekend we will have the honor of Guest Minister Reverend Anne Spencer from the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple. She will help lead our special memorial service honoring Eshinni and Kakushinni.

Who are these folks you ask?

Eshinni and Kakushinni are the wife and daughter of Shinran Shonin, the founding father of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist practices. His wife, Eshinni, or also known as the “mother” of Jodo Shinshu, had supported her spouse in spreading the teachings of Jodo Shinshu.

His daughter, Kakushinni, also helped continue the teachings not only by joining other followers and practitioners, but she had influence on the building of Hongwanji, a mausoleum, to allow followers of Shinran's teachings continue paying respect to his teachings and practices. Kakushinni’s descendants have kept Hongwanji alive.

Come join us along with our Buddhist Women Association (BWA) in honoring these amazing women who helped pioneered Jodo Shinshu teachings.
